I am considering purchasing a rehauled Marlene Acme Master. Does anyone have experience with these? What level horn would they be considered? I am looking for on under a grand for my daughter that plans to be a music major. I wanted to get something nice, but the budget is very tight. Any other brands/models that I should consider?
Thank you

It's reputed to be a very decent old horn. If the price is under $400, and it has been overhauled and is in good playing condition....you probably won't do betterlooking around for something else...see here:

You'd be better off going for a second hand yamaha like a model 21, 23 or similar.
Plenty around , lots of parts and techs and teachers like them.
I've got one - acme but the body is bent near the octave key.

This shows the damage

Been told its not worth repairing.
Other than the bend , there is a post off(its in the case) and needs a proper overhaul
new pads.

From a (Malerne) Acme Master owner:
I don't remember where I originally saw those Buffet Evette pics but luckily I found good pics of the Buffet Evette Schaeffer tenor currently for sale on eBay.
I'm uploading those pics here just for one reason: I don't have pics of my Acme Master ready but if you look at this Buffet Evette Schaeffer and imagine a different engraving on the bell, just replace 'Evette Schaeffer Paris' with 'Acme Master' and you'll see my Acme Master tenor.
Now I'm convinced I have a Buffet stencilled (or vice versa?) Acme Master which is in fact simply a 50-s Evette Scaeffer. I doubt Malerne stencilled Evette Schaeffer horns.
How good were those 50-s Evette Schaeffer saxophones?
Edit: Sorry for possible confusion, I just realized that I may be completely wrong about presenting my Acme Master as Buffet made Malerne Acme Master.
From the very beginning I could be under wrong impression connecting the 'Acme Master' trademark with the R. Malerne workshop. Was 'Acme Master' trademark actually owned by Malerne?
If not then 'Acme Master' could belong to some wind instruments retailer business and then there is ABSOLUTELY no connection between Buffet made Acme Master(s) and Malerne made ones.
Well, I'm confused myself.

Didn't know Acme was real! Did Wile E. Coyote play the sax, then?

I had to look up in the Wikipedia who this Coyote was. I hope these real saxophones are at least unlike many of the Coyote's questionable merchandise shipped to him from the ACME corp. :)
By the way, in the Wikipedia article about Coyote there is some unverified information concerning the real Acme brand: '...the most likely explanation is the Sears house brand called Acme that appeared in their ubiquitous early 1900s mail-order catalogues'.
Has anyone researched the origins of this saxophone brand name? If it was marketed on the US market I see it's quite possible that Sears could be the distributor of those saxophones. At least for my Acme (actually Evette Schaeffer) saxophone judging by its simple construction I could say that it would probably nicely fit the Sears range of goods.

Pete, how did you do on that Acme Master back in the 7th grade? Any impressions left? Can you share your opinion please?
Do you feel the YTS-23 is a significant upgrade from that AM since no further upgrade is required as you state? :)

I'm not sure if someone else is interested in this subject as much as I am but here is another piece of information to consider: on the following page
http://www.doctorsax.biz/evette_schaeffer_alto.htm
doctor sax states that thier Evette Schaeffer sax was made by Malerne for Buffet. This may suggest that some (how many of?) Evette Schaeffer horns were Malerne stencils, made by Malerne that is. Is this possible?
On the other hand the header of Malerne section warns that 'Note that some (Malerne) models are Buffet stencils'. Sorry if misinterpret this note but I understand that 'Someone's stencil' means made by that 'Someone' for another company, not vice versa.

The alto in the pictures looks like a malerne to me. Square bell to body brace Malerne LH cluster and the Malerne Eb/C keys. So I would say the Buffets were Malerne stencils. That is Malerne made horns for Buffet.
