Can you help me identify my sax? I just have 3 pictures, and I will have to take more, and get the number off of it...(Its not with me at the moment)
But I can tell you this, the octave says "Wood-Wind-Brass-Wind" on it... :D

I'm not sure about the flames (from your pic)--a custom job on those apparently, but I'd guess this as being one of the house brand from Woodwind and Brasswind (www.wwbw.com). I've got one of their sopranos. Cheaper asian-made horns, but mostly OK.

I was told this was a very good horn....

No saxophone that has flames on it is a "very good horn". It probably gets the job done, which is what you need though

Here's the current WWBW altos saxes in the link above. How old is yours? They're OK, but hopefully you didn't get soaked on the purchase.

I paid $260+ shipping for a used double-neck sop that doesn't have a single scratch.

People will tell you anything to sell you their stuff. It's called 'Creative Marketing'.
I hope you can return it.

Hey--live and learn. It could have been much worse. In another thread, an unscrupulous store sold some student's poor grandma a cheapo sax for several thousand dollars cash--pretty ugly scene. If yours plays well and is in good shape, you're fine. Plus, you've got the fancy paint job.:D

How does it play? Was it fairly new and in good shape when you got it?

Hey man, you've had it for a few years. Here's the question: Has it worked well for you to this point? If the answer is yes, it's got you as far as any student sax ever really does. If it's time to upgrade, keep this one for it's conversational value (the flames are quite... different), and go for something a bit more well known. If it's playing the way you want it to, there's no reason to fret over it's lack of supposed prestige. I have a nine year old Taiwan made soprano that has held up exceptionally well, and I have no desire to upgrade. I overpaid for it, but so what? That's in the past, I've enjoyed it, so it's all water over the dam. It could be a lot worse. I know a guy who paid 1700 dollars for a Selmer Liberty student horn (also Asian in origin), which is stupidly expensive for what it is. Drop the Selmer name and it's no more valuable than $500 brand new.

Zoot,
I haven't seen a serial number/model chart for these horns. Maybe WWBW can help you out though, or others who have the horns can give you a relative date based on when they bought theirs by comparing numbers.

PS--I'm not sure how old my sop is either--I think I'm the third owner. I'll check the s/n. Also, I noticed that the models have changed slightly since my sop was sold too (i.e. they don't offer something quite exactly like it currently--close though)

So how many Sax you all own,and what makes/models/years?

bandmommy

Most 'store brand' horns are nearly impossible to date from serial numbers.
Unless you know exactly which company was contracted for production you're pretty much SOL.
WWBW may be able to tell you the day it was sold, but thats probably about it.

The biggest problem with the cheap horns from Asia is that some are OK but most are bad. They may be able to be fixed to play but intonation will be poor and keeping them working is difficult. If one comes in for repair, I will just do what I can in 5 minutes, not charge them and send them on their way. I can't really take money to fix these as they will be back over and over.
You asked what we own which is a loaded question! Over the years most of us have owned a lot of saxes. I guess I have had over a hundred but keep about 25-30.
IF you are serious about playing, get a used Yamaha YAS-23 for under $500 or spend under a thousand for a good working vintage pro horn which will increase in value as the years go past. BTW, I played with Zoot in the 60s once.

Well at least I'll know the Model and year made, right?

It was a wwbw house horn with a limited run. I believe they started selling them around 99-00. They probably sold the last of them about 3 years ago. Student line horn I believe.

Anybody who wants to drop the cash for the custom paint job can get it done just like that. So I suppose it is rare since there aren't many like it, but it is not likely valuable. (sorry) :(

2).Does anyone know the web-site for Wood-Wind * Brass-Wind,so I can find out the info on my horn?
3).Is their any easy way to remember the fingerings I think C is the 3rd one down,and B is the to top fingers,I can figure 'em out,well anyway,have a great day,and rememeber I'M new,and I'M sorry but I'M very[Impnt]:D

Oh man, I love that paint job!!! I guess I'm alone in thinking that saxophones with zebra stripes/flames/whatever are AWESOME! maybe they don't tend to be high end horns, but there's no reason they couldn't be.

Although the idea of getting my SA80 alto done up in plaid does kind of horrify me, if I found a great playing horn with a ridiculous pattern I'd kind of consider it a bonus.

Anyway..

1) nope, does it matter?
2) try googling it.
3) Practice. and get a teacher.

Zoot--I posted it in this very thread TWICE! (Once for the homepage--post #2, and another time directly to their alto selection--post #5.)

www.wwbw.com (3rd time's a charm?)
