I found the meyer metal to have quite a dark tone actually. Darker than my rubber meyer anyways...which seems strange considering the design, but anyways there you go. The Yanagisawa metal was much brighter than both my meyers.

I've played both the Yani and metal Meyer and I thought they were pretty bright. The Otto Link metal might be worth a try.
This Chinese Selmer copy that cost under $30 has a pretty dark sound but you might not be able to tell from the computer mic.

Is there a reason why you say metal mp for dark tone?

Because you can get great dark tone on all sorts of gear, right.

Ask your self whether you require any lift in the sound or you just want it smooth and dark.

Next what sort of music do you play?

A992 is a very good saxophone for sure its got some interesting colour tones.

I may be able to help guide you onto one or two little gems for this horn

but you have to be more specific on dark tone. Best way is give an example of a famous player or players sounds that you gravitate towards then you can narrow it down.

You know, those Musical Wheel MPCs are some of the most underrated MPCs around! I got the a size 8 for my vintage Tenor, and my Soprano. I really could not appreciate how these MPCs sounded until I heard them back on a recording! With are harder reed, they give off a dark classical sound, but with a softer reed, they give off the lounge reedy sound.

Excellent right,Paul Desmond what a fantastic player he was so under rated.

Its strange years ago I use to think that if Desmond played tenor sax he would have the sound of Getz and if he played Bari his sound would belike mulligans.

Amazingly you can get very very close to Desmonds sound on a buescher true tone with a selmer mp but the catch is got to be one of the old ones.

Desmond himself played a selmer the one with the close g sharp key 1949 I think could be wrong on the date haven't got my chart handy.

I would go for a selmer mp a D or an E .If you can (find a second hand old one they are by far the better but new ones arn't bad.)

Link black hand rubber are good but Im not sure thats the animal for alto, and pitching you have to be spot on.

Meyer could be an option an amazing mp used by Cannonball, Art pepper phillwoods the list goes on. They are smooth but you can zip them up easy you know get a touch of lift if requird in the sound.

If you pushed me, I would say don't get the c or c* they are fine but I would prefer a touch more width to centre the sound, perhaps give you a few more options. so may be the D is a good compromise.

Desmond is a deceiving improviser there are a lot more scoops and bends into his approach then is at first apparent.

The older silver melal mp (Selmer ) c d or e are excellent as well.

I think the new ones still have that little chain thing round the shank,

Both types of selmer are good for the job but I would try get an old one if you can.

In conclusion the only other thing to remember is all mp are very slightly differnt, even the same model ,make etc, but thats just a refinement thing.

Lastly the A992 is a great sax for sure but to get the ultimate smooth horn you tend to go for vintage sax.But i'm sure you will find something to work well on the 992.

Little trick I can pass on for free if your ever looking for a good vintage sax.

Always go for the darkest horn in the shop.( that way gives you max possibilitys of any style) Its easy to brighten the sound up as much as you like but going the other way with an already bright horn is tough.

Because in the jazz world constantly searching for more and more width of sound.

Funny, I never even had a hint of Desmond in my alto tone until I dumped my SBA in favor of a True Tone. Great horns, those True Tone altos.

When I was on an alto mouthpiece binge some years ago, I came across a vintage Wolfe Tayne metal mouthpiece that was simply cavernous in shape and in sound. I'm off metal though, for all my horns except for a Selmer Metal Classic that is just a great match for my VI soprano. But if it's got to be metal... try digging up one of those old pieces. They don't go for a fortune either, like some other vintage pieces.

I find the Bari Gold quite bright, but it can be made to sound dark. It's a great piece though. I am very happy with mine.
