Hey there, I'm a high school alto sax player. I'm planning to start on tenor for various reasons. The versatility I would have has been alluring for me for a long time, and I'm playing in a pit orchestra, and everyone (save percussion) is required to double something. That said...I'm a little strapped for cash, being a student and all. I need a decent-sounding, reliable horn that won't cost me a kidney. Is there any particular make or model that would be good for someone in my situation? Thanks a lot.

a Yamaha 52 or even a YTS 61 if you want a pro horn; both should be less than a $1000. ck ebay for prices, music stores are higher; perhaps you can buy from an individual in your area who no longer plays. older Yamahas are decent saxes, hold their value well if you take care of em and didn't pay too much to start with; be careful of ebay, sometimes those horns need work. there are other options, other horns, just depends on what you want to spend.

For that matter I have a YTS-23 which has good intonation and plays easily and sounds good. It's not a shiner but I keep it for a backup. It's a low-fuss type of horn, holds up well and tonal colors are subjective. Anyway, I guess I concur with Yamaha. I use Yamaha synthesizers, too. They should endorse me ;-)
