Ok, I'm a Senior in High School and I have played alto saxophone from 6th grade up until the beginning of this year when I switched over to Bari (I'm glad I did :lol: ). At first I struggled because I was not used to playing such a huge horn and having to blow with a "loose" jaw and firm lip unlike the Alto. I'm glad to say That I've been doing well in Jazz Band, but there are several problems that will arise very soon:
1) I can't Join the Jazz band at the college I will be attending.
2) The Bari Sax is very historic and belongs to my HS Band. Therefore No Horn!
3) I don't want to go back to Alto, rather I want to play tenor.

What does a starving sax player do with no horn and no reason to play one? I do not want to giving up playing my saxophone forever, but there are very VERY few bands (if any) locally who need or use saxophone players. Looks Like I'm gonna have to say goodbye come May 30 (graduation)

Options:

1) Buy a horn - whatever size you prefer.

2) Join the band in whatever capacity will let you borrow a school horn.

3) Why look for existing bands that don't use horns? Start your own band!

4) Blow if off for 4 years, study well, then get a good job and buy all the horns you can before you get married. :shock:

If you really love playing the sax, you will;

A) find a way to buy a horn. Put in some extra time at your job etc.

B) You'll meet people to play with at school, even if it's outside of the school sanctioned jazz band.

Sounds to me like you have other reasons why you don't want to play at college. I think you need to do some soul searching because, where there's a will, there's a way!

Ive done the exact same thing you have man, and I didnt want to go back to the alto sax. I insteadput in many hours last summer at work, to allow me to buy a my tenor, a zephyr Special. Its a little beat up so not much of a looker, but its a player, and for 200$, I can live with it till I can afford the horns I want. And I agree with Dr. G, why look for other bands whn you can start your own? Good luck!

See if there is a local community band near where you will be going to school and join it. If you want to keep playing Bari then you can look for an old Conn or Buescher for a decent price or just play alto again for a while.

Good luck.
