Total newbie here so please forgive me if I missed the very well posted list of song writters/sax jazz players/recommended listening.

I will just say for my part Coleman Hawkins is probably the main reason I picked up the sax in the first place.

I know he is a bit older but then so am I.

Any thoughts on The Hawk?

One of the greatest jazz musicians ever.

For me, one of the most impressive things about him was his ability to keep growing and using newer harmonic language. He didn't stay locked in one era, stylistically, as time went on to the extent that some of his contemporaries did.

I just love the lyricism in his playing - the small group stuff he did in the early forties always blows me away.

I end every practice session playing Coleman's verson of Body & Soul. Unbeleivable.
