Great player! As an eternal gear-head I'm thinking of his setup (ofcourse) Very thick, fat low notes and haunting highs. A meyer perhaps?

It's a rare moment that I find an alto sound that I really like these days.

Anyone?

Sound is about concept, not gear. One should be able to get a similar tone on almost any good mouthpiece. Why not get an inexpensive one? Brilhart, Meyer and Vandoren make alto mouthpieces for under $100USD. The current production Brilharts can be had for under $50. Start with that.

Nothing better than a Meyer 5 and a horn that seals well.

Absolutely.

My dream set-up, that I recorded with ~11 years ago, was a Meyer 5 with a gold-plated BA alto that Emilio let me borrow.

I actually have a current production Brilhart Ebolin 3*. Is it normal that the tip and side rails are SUPER thick? It's quite resistant mouthpiece and the sound is quite nice actually.

i have both a brilhart and a meyer, both are quite nice. That sound I feel comes with opening up and playing with nice warm air

I don't 100% agree that it's all concept and not gear. Take Sanborn for instance. No way can you tell me that Sanborn would get the same sound on a Meyer 5. I do agree with all the responses so far on getting a sound like the guy in the clip. The guy seemed to have a flub in the beginning but after that he sound really great.

interesting reed choice, let me know how that hybrid works out.
By the way, keep it on the DL, you might p*ss off Rico and Vandoren

;)just kidding of course.....

Well yea, equipment is very important. I wont play a Gregory to sound like Sanborn. But the clip basically demonstrated a traditional style rich jazz alto sound and the equipment preferred for this is no secret.
Alot of the sound might be the mic to in that clip, and the reverb in the room.

It sounds like the vintage Selmer (Soloist E on table) that I am the lucky owner of. 8-)

Yup, the rails and tip are thick.
I have a 3* as well.
They are nice. I like the resistance.

Maceo Parker plays one.

Get a Vandoren V16, make sure to try several and pick your favorite. I find that they are good mouthpieces that let you sound they way you want. They come in many facings and two chamber sizes. For what you were describing I would recommend a 6 or 7 Medium chamber. The small chamber is quicker responding and it is a little brighter.

This horn was perfect. I doubt he would have held it for over 10 years, do you? It was sold within a few months of me playing it.

Yeah, the tip and side rails seem to be thicker than the vintage models, but I have found the new ones to be quite good. A new Brilhart 3* should work well with a Rico 3 or 3 1/2 or a Vandoren 2 1/2 or 3.

I'm getting alot of versatility out of my CE Super Shocka piece. Its a little brighter than this tone but I can darken it nicely and still get the edgy bite I want. I think its based on a Guardala but not so bright. I had a Meyer 6 and then Lakey 7 back when I was playing pro in St Louis but now I'm bored with my tone on a Meyer. Just me? K
