I have two vintage Selmer B* short shank tenor pieces that I am considering having refaced. One round chamber scroll shank pre-soloist, and one ss Soloist. The question is, how far can they be opened up? :?: I'm looking to get a Getz/Henderson type of clear, natural sound similar to my Link Reso Chamber but more clear, cold, and dark. Thanks.

If the interior side walls are concave curved, the refacer has to avoid cutting into them. To get a big opening, the table needs to be cut in a way to angle the reed away from the tip (this is a lot of work). The rails still need to be cut some to get the final facing. If the sides are straight, you can do all the cutting on the rails, but then you have to do a lot of baffle reshaping. Good results can be obtained, but it starts to not look like the original piece. I use a combo of both methods.

Mojo, that is a good idea to cut the table at an angle. Place two or more overlapping layers of clear tape across the table near the window end. Then wet sand the table until the tape gets sanded off. Now there will be a different table angle, producing a larger tip opening. The last step is to blend the sharp table intersection by the start of the facing. Use a sweeping curving action of the mouthpiece table on the sanding block to join into the facing curve.

there is a new poster here going by the name of PisoMojodo (Wet floor)!
