I know this is a generalization, but I hear it all the time. Get a Meyer styled MP for Alto and an Otto Link type MP for Tenor. Is there a MP that is recognized as the standard for a bari sax?

I don't know if they are the standard, but metal Bergs seem to be quite popular on bari. There may not be enough of a bari-playing population to have made any one mouthpiece the "standard" per se. I use a vintage Meyer and am pretty happy with that.

it all depends on the type of playing, otto links seeem popular for bari for jazz, but for classical most people stick with a C*

I've never played a Berg on anything before. I did a search and found that many people on the forum do play them. I looked them up and was rather confused by all the options. Any insight on sorting those out?

You may just need to try out a lot of different berg's to see what you want. The Berg website has a "choose mouthpiece" section that explains what each option does. http://www.berglarsen.com/choosemps.htm
A great inexpensive mouthpiece is the yamaha 5c. It doesn't get a whole lot of praise, however I have seen it used, as well as used it in both jazz band and concert band settings, and for $40 you can't go wrong.
I would offer the Vandoren B75 as a (not the) "modern standard" for the following reasons:
1. Generally playable out of the box, does not need to be perfected.
2. Readily available.
3. Nice assertive, tone.
4. Easy ligature fit, cheap ligs available, ie Masters.
5. Not too expensive new, good deals used.
6. It's been around long enough to be a proven design.

I play 2 Berg Larsens on bari. The one I'm currently loving is the SS 115/3M. The other is a HR 110/2M. I've been having reed issues with this piece. Both of them have a lot of edge that makes my bari just honk when I want it. With the right reed, the 110 is the loudest, edgiest bari piece I've ever played, but I don't transition from this to my tenor pieces very well, so it's in the dog house right now.
I'd like to check out a Vandoren B75 also. Anyone with a used one they'd like to get rid of...I'm looking. I've heard a lot of good on these too!

i use a metal Runyon Quantum and Berg Larsen SS 110/2. I find that they are both excellent MPC's. They are both very good for classical and jazz pieces. most people say they are "jazz mouthpieces" but it all depends on how you play them. They are VERY versitile i highly recommend them.

Otto Link 7 or 6 are the most popular I've seen. They sound pretty good for just about anyone.

I agree (I own an M7), but they are hard to come by now.
I have an Otto Link 5 metal on order (had to cancel the 5* order--was caught up in weather). If it's too closed, I can always have it opened up. Didn't want one too open though. My M7 fits that bill just fine :) .

I play a Link 8*, Runyon Jaguar 12, Wolf Tayne 7*, and RARELY a Ponzol M1 for jazz, and Goldbeck, Selmer S90 E or the Yamaha 5c for wind ensemble. I've seen a lot of Link STM *metal* as well as Meyers used in Jazz/Big Band, and Selmer C*'s seem to be popular in classical stuff, however as is with tenor, I think the C* is too close of a tip, but that's just me.
+1 on Vandoren B5 though. I haven't seen many of them, however the ones I have seen are great, and sound awesome. Problem with these is that the band directors don't seem to have caught on. They hear about the Link 7* for tenor, and the Meyer 5m/C* for alto being "standard" and assume that these transpose down to bari.

I'd say that HR Links are the most common mouthpieces I see people playing on bari, and they're great, but Metalites are, amongst people "in the know," a good standard for a bright, edgy tone.

The most common, I see, are Berg Larsens, Meyers, and Lawtons. I think the best Bari Mouthpieces are the Berg Larsens. I have never once had any trouble with playing these. All reeds work great with them, but the best fitting are the Rico lines, Branchers and VanDorens. I am currently playing a 130/2 with between 2.5 and 4 strength reeds. I would love to find a 135 or bigger HR Berg Larsen.
If you can find a relatively open Berg, I think you will love it.

Its all down to what suits, I started off with a HR Berg many many years ago, which I wish I still had. Then moved onto a metal Berg, then a Brillhart Level Air and finally Lawtons, which I have played for over 25 years. I recently got a HR Link modified by Dave Jary which I am using more and more these days especially for theatre work.

I have a Runyon, Berg, and RPC. I don't get along with the Runyon, my Berg HR is OK, but the RPC Kills them both.
