View Full Version : Mpc for Conn chu Alto
Just bought a Conn chu alto. Great shape. Having it repadded and was wondering what the best kind of mouthpiece for it would be. Was thinking along the line of the new Selmer Paris Soloist that they have brought back out. Any thoughts?

DanF: I've done this. The new Soloist was just too long for the micro-tuner neck. Even when it sounded great, I could not go on far enough (or screw down the neck far enough) to allow the Soloist to play a tad sharp (which one must do on occasion). I had to go back to my Meyer 6S-Medium chamber piece. While that may not work for you, I'd think my Soloist experience may be consistent for others. Good luck. By the way, the new Soloist is a wonderful piece - for me - and I use it on all of my other altos, new and vintage. DAVE

Meyer 5M/M works well on mine, and reasonably in tune. An old Brilhart Tonalin works well too, with a more focused sound than the Meyer.

I recently purchased a selmer soloist "E" for my chu alto. It works in tune (The horn used to be sharp, specially in middle "D" and "A"). I used to play on a meyer 6 but I switched cause I'm looking for a darker sound. Meyer sounded good anyway, but I had some intonation problems. However, I think that you can say that a mpc works well after playing it during less 3 months. It's a lot of work, to find your sound on it!!

You know, it seems like I remember someone on the old forum saying that their Jodyjazz piece worked well. Anybody out there using one on their Chu? I think the clear blue one would look kinda cool, mebbe, on a silver Chu. . . . 8)

I have both a Chu alto and the blue JodyJazz mouthpiece. Unfortunately I can only vouch for it's looks, as my chu was "out of comission" then, and I'm still waiting to get it back from the tech. I should be able to provide more in about a week. I can say, with much experience, that a C* is HORRIBLE on the chu... blech..

Swedish Chef:
Definately post your findings when you get your Chu back & slap the J.J. on it.

Sorry it took me this long. I got my Chu back from a repad on Wednesday before heading to Vancouver for a band competition. Anyways, all I can say is wow! I quite like the JJ on the sax. It is definately more.. lush than my other sax (Yamaha 23). I find the intonation vastly superior to the C* on the Chu. I don't find it bright at all. I like it without the spoiler more than with it in. I'm not sure what else to say. I have played a Meyer 6M on it, but that was before the sax was just repadded. I'd prefer the better intonation of the JJ. If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

'30 silver Chu alto, blue JJ #6, love it, haven't looked at any other pieces for this horn and don't plan to. This tip size works fine for me, using Rico's or La Voz in 2.5's or mediums. Could see going up a notch or two in tip size but to be honest, for now it's working great as it is.
Very flexible for me, can be flute-like in the upper register if I want, will put out a broader or more aggressive tone as well, very robust down below. This is no doubt as much a factor of the horn as the mouthpiece, just saying for me it's a great combination, love it. As they say, your mileage may vary...
