well, i finally took the plunge and added a Boosey Edgware (Kohlert Bixley) to the fambly. i gotta tell ya, it's a bomb. i played it out for the first time last night (blues jam) and while i wasn't too impressed with my playing, the sound got me over and the ccmments were all positive. of course, people will say anything, but the bottom line is... i love this horn! it's just more "out there". the keywork will take a bit of getting used to, but for me it's an inspiring horn...i just wanna play. (and can you say subtones?) i'm using a Florida USA Link 5, although when i took it to my techs, one of them put his 8* Dukoff SP (or S) on it and 'bout tore the roof off the sucka. it does need some tightening up and perhaps that's why i'm having a bit of a hard time with intonation on a coupla lh palm keys (d, d#). but for now, i'm just gonna let it play on.

I went to a band rehearsal for a new blues band I'm going to play in and the bass player had a Boosey and Hawkes Oxford alto in excellent condition with a 70K serial number. It looked like a bixley. It was lacquer with nickle keys and key guards. The action and scale were very similar to my 57. The horn was heavy and built like a tank. It had original pads. The bass player told me he got it up in Canada in the 70s for $50 at an Indian reservation.

LOL, makes me remember brother Jim Pepper and esp. his tune, "Witchi Tai To".
